A pair of recent studies show a powerful, systemic relationship between trauma—physical violence, sexual abuse and the like—and HIV/AIDS among American women, Medical Xpress reports. According to this new research, American women with HIV who report recent trauma are almost four times as likely as the national average to have unsafe sex and over four times as likely to experience treatment failure. In addition, HIV-positive American women are twice as likely as the national average to have suffered from domestic violence and over five times as likely to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
