Spreading HIV in Asia, for richer or for poorer
Many studies have examined the relationship between a lack of access to resources and an increased risk for contracting HIV, but recent research presented at the 8th International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, showed that HIV prevalence in some wealthier Asian populations was five times as high as some of the poorest. Researchers found that the clients of sex workers accounted for large numbers of Asia’s HIV cases—most of whom are well-to-do men. The preliminary study’s results are still under review by UNAIDS and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). “If these results are confirmed, we will have to reconsider seriously our prevention strategies in Asia,” says Dr. Jacques Jeugmans of the ADB. Talk about money problems.
