A man from New South Wales, Australia, sued his ex-boyfriend for knowingly transmitting HIV to him, the Star Observer reports. The plaintiff was awarded $757,487 in damages by the court for his pain and suffering, loss of income and loss of life expectancy. The plaintiff and the defendant had unprotected sex, but the plaintiff contended that he would not have done so if he had known the defendant was HIV positive. This is believed to be the first such civil case in Australia. Local police may also pursue criminal charges against the defendant.
