Profiles of Adult Philadelphians Who Were Born HIV Positive

The first babies born with HIV are now reaching 30, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer in a profile of young adults born positive. Of the more than 1 million HIV-positive American adults, 1 percent were infected perinatally or through blood transfusions and hemophilia. In 2007, the 37 states reporting to the CDC estimated a total of 7,757 people who contracted HIV perinatally, though officials think the number is higher. Since 1995, the rate of mother-to-child transmission has dropped from 20 percent to 1 percent due to breakthroughs in medication and care.
