Activists Arrested at NYC World AIDS Day Bagel Breakfast


Nine HIV/AIDS activists were arrested outside New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s annual World AIDS Day Bagel Breakfast at the Brooklyn Public Library, according to a Housing Works statement. The activists, dressed in bagel costumes, blocked traffic and attempted to chain themselves together. Charles King, president and CEO of Housing Works, was one of the activists arrested. Others—dressed as bagels, bananas, coffee cups and other breakfast-related costumes—protested the breakfast nearby. The activists were decrying the fact that Bloomberg pledges each World AIDS Day to help low-income New Yorkers with HIV and then proposes cuts to AIDS services.
