A new five-year National Strategic Plan for HIV aims to cut new HIV cases by 70 percent in Burma through HIV education programs, The Myanmar Times reports. The plan will also provide antiretrovirals to more HIV-positive people and will use the meds to reduce mother-to-child transmissions. In 2009, there were 237,684 people living with HIV in Burma. That year also saw 17,556 AIDS-related deaths and 17,101 new HIV cases. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is the plan’s main funding partner. It will provide $46.5 million for HIV projects in Burma in 2011 and 2012.
