The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 1.2 million people with HIV in the United States and that there are about 56,300 new HIV cases each year.

About half of those cases originate from people who are unaware of their status. (20 percent of HIV-positive Americans don’t know they have the virus.) This means someone who doesn’t know his or her status is almost 4 times more likely to transmit HIV as someone who does.

Further proof that testing equals prevention.
