In the United States, 1 in 22 blacks and 1 in 52 Latinos will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetimes compared with 1 in 170 whites, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report released on National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, October 15. Latino males have a three times higher lifetime risk of HIV diagnosis and Latina women have a five times higher rate compared with their white male and female counterparts, according to the report. As The Washington Post noted, other CDC data showed that despite the high HIV risk, Latinos have a greater life expectancy than both blacks and whites.
