CDC: New HIV Cases Among Young Black MSM Up 48%

New HIV cases between 2006 and 2009 remained relatively stable at about 50,000 per year, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statement. These new data come from the CDC’s first multiyear estimate from its national HIV incidence surveillance. New HIV cases among young black men who have sex with men (MSM) increased by 48 percent—from 4,400 cases in 2006 to 6,500 cases in 2009. All racial and ethnic groups of MSM and black women faced the highest HIV rates. The CDC also revised its 2006 estimate of new HIV cases down to 48,000, which previously had been 56,300. The data will be published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE.

Why are queer black men described as "black men who have sex with men"? Is this description meant to prevent gay black men from withholding their sexual preference, for the sake of accurate reporting of their "down low" activity? It seems homophobic to me, and I get annoyed at times, like right now. Why not tell it like it is. They're either gay or bisexual. Do right-wing religious extremists have that much of a strong-arm bully pulpit? Someone set the record gay, please! Thanks.

I believe it's a tactic that has more psychological logic to it. Most black men are "closeted" or "DL" and WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE the term "GAY", so in efforts to at least get those men to listen, you have to use a different approach. I assure you more "MSM" have taken notice...It's unfortunate but reality....

This is alarming news. In part because using terms like, "MSM", or, "same-sex loving" or whatever, when discussing what is homosexual sex among black men, inculcates the belief that being gay is a bad thing. I think it's time we start revisiting these terms, or do away with them altogether. There are black men that have sex with men. It's a fact. At the risk of seeming insensitive, I vote for guiding "black youth", "black MSM", into the 21st century. We should refrain from feeding self-loating.
