The University of Illinois at Chicago has won a $7 million federal grant to research and target HIV infection in correctional facilities, according to the Chicago Sun Times. The funds are part of a new $50 million initiative from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse to research HIV in correctional facilities. HIV is four times more prevalent among prison and jail inmates than the general population yet there is little research on stemming HIV among this group. Chicago’s program will focus on testing new inmates as they enter the system (unless they refuse). It will also explore whether linking inmates to doctors via teleconference will help them get in drug therapy programs, and it will track HIV-positive inmates after they’re released.
