Two top level Chinese officials have been implicated in a blood selling scandal that may have infected up to 100,000 people in the Henen province with HIV, Agence France Presse (AFP) reports. In the 1990s, villagers sold their blood to stations that pooled the blood into a tub and injected it back into villagers after removing plasma. Local officials initially covered up the scandal, but it was eventually revealed by activist group Aizhixing. Chen Bingzhong, a retired health official, recently wrote an open letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao about the scandal. Chen implicated two of China’s most powerful leaders—both are now part of the country’s highest decision-making body—saying they were aware of the situation and should take responsibility.
