Killer of Ugandan LGBT Activist David Kato Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison
The Ugandan man convicted of murdering LGBT activist David Kato was sentenced to 30 years in prison, Voice of America (VOA) reports. Sidney Nsubuga Enoch was convicted of second-degree murder, which comes with a less severe sentence, even though he confessed to killing Kato at his home in January. Enoch claimed Kato was making sexual advances so he acted in self-defense. In 2009, Kato was among the international human rights and LGBT advocates who opposed a bill to make some homosexual acts punishable by death. In 2010, Kato also opposed an HIV criminalization bill with possible sentences of up to 10 years in prison. Homosexuality is already illegal in Uganda and can currently be punished by up to 14 years in prison.
