The death penalty provision in the Uganda anti-homosexuality bill will probably be dropped, The Guardian reports. David Bahati, the Ugandan Member of Parliament who introduced the bill, said the committee studying the bill is likely to remove the provision, which calls for the death penalty for “active homosexuals” with HIV, perpetrators of same-sex rape and “serial offenders”-a term not defined within the bill. Even if the death penalty is removed, the legislation, which could be voted on before lawmakers convene May 12, still mandates life imprisonment for a “homosexual act.”
