Indiana Jones embarks on his fourth treasure hunt May 22, in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But one of the series’ most beloved characters won’t be making the journey: Dr. Marcus Brody, Indy’s bumbling colleague and friend, who once got “lost in his own museum.”

Brody was played by Oscar-nominated actor Denholm Elliott, who appeared in more than 100 films and television series before dying of an AIDS-related illness in 1992.

Crystal Skull reteams star Harrison Ford with Karen Allen, Indy’s old flame in Raiders of the Lost Ark, who has been absent from the series’ past two installments. The reunion is bittersweet, however, because it makes Elliott’s absence all the more noticeable.

Thom Hartley of TheRaider.net, an online Indiana Jones fan community, says, “A brilliant performer with a subtle wit and comforting presence, Mr. Elliott will live on in the hearts of Indy fans forever.”
