Florida to Drop 350 to 2,000 People From ADAP

The Florida Department of Health plans to drop at least 350 uninsured HIV-positive people from its federally funded AIDS drug assistance program (ADAP) because of a budget crisis, The Sun Sentinel reports. An additional 2,000 people may be bumped if the department can’t close a $16 million shortfall. People in the first group will lose coverage within 30 days, but they will get free or low-cost medications through drug company assistance programs or will be on waiting lists for those programs. The 350 people will be dropped because they have incomes three times the federal poverty level (federal poverty level is $10,830 for a single person and $14,570 for a family of two). The health department said cutting eligibility is the least-painful money-saving step available.
