Six Florida state representatives and one state senator have sent a letter to the state parole commission asking for a compassionate release of Betsie Gallardo, an HIV-positive prisoner dying of cancer and currently serving a five-year sentence, The Florida Independent reports. Prison officials said Gallardo’s case would be reviewed in February, but that is after she is expected to pass away. Her sentence is for battery of a law enforcement agent, but advocates say the charges and punishment were much harsher than normal because she is HIV positive.
