Florida Reduces Its ADAP Waiting List to 427 People
The Florida Legislature has voted to increase funding to
Florida’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) as part of the 2012 state budget,
reducing its waiting list for the program to 427 people, according to a
statement from The AIDS Institute. ADAPs nationwide help provide life-sustaining
medications to low-income, underserved or underinsured people living with
HIV/AIDS. The programs exist through a combination of federal and state funds
and rebates provided by pharmaceutical companies. The Florida ADAP serves about
12,000 people. Because of budget constraints and increased patient demands, the
state waiting list ballooned to more than 4,000 people last year. The
legislature has now passed a budget, signed by the governor, with $2.5 million
for the program.
