The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has appointed Gabriel Jaramillio to the newly created post of general manager, according to a Global Fund statement. Jaramillo, a former chairman and chief executive officer of Sovereign Bank, has more than 35 years of managerial experience in the financial sector. Since his retirement in January 2011, he has served as special advisor to the Office of the Special Envoy for Malaria of the Secretary General of the United Nations. A member of the panel that reviewed the Global Fund’s processes for overseeing and regulating its finances, Jaramillo was selected for the new role as part of a four-year plan to maximize the organization’s efficiency and accountability. This comes after the resignation of Global Fund executive director Michel Kazatchkine.
