Five years after donating $450 million in five-year grants to more than 40 cutting-edge scientific proposals, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is assessing the grantees’ progress and deciding whether to continue or cut funding, The New York Times reports. Despite advances on many fronts, including HIV/AIDS, more than two thirds of grants are not being renewed because there are scientific or political obstacles, the foundation has changed its goals or other programs are proving more successful.
