Mixed Results for Gates Foundation HIV Prevention in India

An HIV/AIDS prevention program in India funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has had irregular results, according to an analysis in The Lancet and reported by The New York Times. The foundation has contributed $338 million since 2003 to its program called Avahan, which focuses on high-risk groups throughout six Indian states. Infections dropped significantly in three states, slightly in one state and not at all in two others. The study estimates the program prevented 100,000 infections and cost about $2,500 per infection prevented. Currently, India is thought to have the third highest HIV rate globally. The foundation plans to shift responsibility to the Indian government.
