Global Fund Announces Appointees for Financial Review

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has appointed former U.S. Secretary of Health Michael Leavitt and past President of Botswana Festus Gontebanye Mogae to cochair an external review of its financial systems following fraud and misuse of its grants, The Wall Street Journal reports. The formation of this panel comes as the U.S. Congress is debating a potential 43 percent cut in contributions to the Global Fund, from $1.05 billion to $600 million.

In a statement, Ambassador Eric Goosby, the U.S. global AIDS coordinator, said, “The United States welcomes the appointment, [and] we cannot tolerate corruption or misuse of funds. We support essential reforms and steps to improve oversight and fiduciary controls.”
