The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria faces a budgetary shortfall of more than $1 billion, Agence France Press (AFP) reports. Donor nations and organizations have only pledged $11.7 billion of the $13 billion required to meet the fund’s minimum budgetary goals from 2011 to 2013. The fund estimates that its maximum needs for that period could go as high as $20 billion. Aside from the global economic slump, Germany and Sweden are withholding millions of dollars while they audit previous grants for corruption.
