A bill to expand HIV testing in New York has passed through the state legislature and awaits Governor David Patterson’s signature, the Housing Works blog reports. The bill mandates all doctors to offer HIV tests to patients ages 13 to 64 and allows for only oral consent in rapid HIV testing. Current law requires only certain doctors to offer HIV tests to patients ages 18 to 64 and written consent for all HIV testing. The bill would still require doctors to obtain written consent to run blood tests for HIV.
