An Indiana man was awarded a $1.25 million judgment against a collections agency that disclosed he was HIV positive, The Bilerico Project blog reports. A judge ruled that Internal Medicine Associates (IMA) violated the man’s privacy by including his name and HIV status in a publicly filed collections case for a past due bill of $326. IMA failed to convince the jury that it was under no obligation because the man (whose name was not included in this lawsuit) shared his HIV status with family and sexual partners.
