IAS Gives Fellowships for Research in Drug Use and HIV
The International AIDS Society (IAS) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) awarded five research fellowships to further research in the link between drug use and HIV, according to an IAS statement. Injection drug use accounts for 36 percent of all new HIV cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and substances such as alcohol, cocaine and methamphetamine are associated with increased HIV risk behaviors. Presentation of the IAS/NIDA fellowships will take place on July 23 at the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 20102) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
