HIV Treatment Research Funding Exceeded $2B in 2009

The collected data on global investments in HIV research shows that funding for treatment research topped $2.46 billion in 2009, according to a joint report from The Treatment Action Group, AVAC and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). This marks the first time such data was collected. According to the report, 48 funders worldwide reported investing $2.46 billion across six research categories including basic science, drug discovery and development, and antiretroviral prevention. Public sector funders made up about three fourths of spending, with the National Institutes of Health topping the list, investing $1.6 billion in 2009. With new evidence showing the benefits of early treatment, the report called for further funding for new, simpler, more resilient and less toxic drug regimens
