Stigma Blocks HIV Prevention for MSM, Transgender People
A new study shows that human rights violations, discrimination and violence are a major barrier to HIV prevention and treatment for men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people, according to a statement by the Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF). The study of in-depth interviews, conducted by MSMGF and commissioned by the World Health Organization, cites five major factors as severe obstacles to access: homophobia and transphobia, HIV stigma, criminalization and repressive policies, lack of awareness among providers, and safety.
