New Approach for HIV Prevention in Haiti, Dominican Republic

The Michigan State University (MSU) Institute of International Health is proposing a new approach to HIV prevention in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, reports. The Dominican Republic and Haiti share the island of Hispaniola, which accounts for nearly 75 percent of HIV/AIDS cases in the Caribbean. MSU’s approach introduces telemedicine training to selected partners and focuses on cultural competency and screening for sexually transmitted infections. It also focuses on overcoming barriers to sustainable HIV prevention programs, such as lack of funding and resources, inadequately trained personnel and absence of sustainable government HIV prevention policies. MSU will present its HIV prevention strategy in February at the Global Risk Forum’s One Health Summit 2012 in Davos, Switzerland.
