Gay Couple Supports Haiti Earthquake Survivors, AIDS Orphans

Luke Montgomery—who founded an AIDS orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti—has launched an online initiative with his partner, Nate Guidas, to bring emergency medicine, food and tents to remote regions of Haiti affected by the January 12 earthquake.

The pair rushed to Haiti 48 hours after the quake to check on Montgomery’s orphanage. The men were relieved to find none of the orphans harmed. The couple then focused their relief efforts on a local hospital that had collapsed.

Montgomery and Guidas founded the fundraising website causecommandos.com, which uses 100 percent of its proceeds to purchase emergency relief supplies. Before starting the website, the pair had already raised more than $10,000 from family and friends in the LGBT community.

Montgomery’s no stranger to activism for AIDS and LGBT causes. In 1993, he made world headlines by interrupting then President Clinton’s World AIDS Day speech and accusing him of not doing enough to fight the epidemic.

The couple created a short video detailing their mission in Haiti. Watch it below.
