In the Face of Affliction is part of a visual study by photographer Joan Lobis Brown where nearly 900 people living with—and affected by—HIV/AIDS from 83 countries were photographed reacting to the stigma surrounding the virus.

Brown took the images at two medical clinics in Cape Town in 2009. The HIV status of the subjects is unknown.

A special exhibit of Brown’s work will be on display July 18–23 in Vienna during the XVIII International AIDS Conference at the Hotel Altstadt.
