HIV Anti-Discrimination Law Proposed in India

A proposed law in India will severely punish those who discriminate against people with HIV, The Times of India reports. The HIV/AIDS Prevention & Control Bill says a person whose spoken or written words may lead to hostility or hatred against an HIV-positive person could go to jail for two years. In addition, the law provides rights for people with HIV such as: a person with HIV cannot be denied employment or fired unless an independent health care provider says the person poses a risk to others in the workplace, and an HIV test cannot be a prerequisite for employment, health care, housing or education.
