School Bans Girl With HIV-Positive Father in Indonesia

A 6-year-old girl in Indonesia was thrown out of a Jakarta elementary school after other parents complained to administrators about her father having HIV, reports. A text message from the school informed the girl and her family that she was no longer welcome and that her admission had been canceled. The school later asked that the girl submit to a blood test to be readmitted, the girl’s mother told an Indonesian newspaper, a requirement not asked of other children. The girl’s father, Fajar Jasmin Sugandhi, said that the school board’s actions were no longer about him or his daughter, but were an issue of human rights. He demanded that the school board issue a formal public apology to his daughter. According to a Metro TV interview, a school representative said he was only sorry that the news had arrived via text message.
