Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD, has published his first-hand account of the beginning of the AIDS crisis, according to a Forum for Collaborative HIV Research statement. “The Early Days of AIDS, As I Remember Them” is the title of Koop’s paper in the March 29 issue of The Annals of the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research. He recounts how AIDS “became needlessly mired in the homosexual politics of the early 1980s.” He also recounts how he overcame the many obstacles to the publication of his special report on AIDS in 1986, which advocated for sex education and condoms.
