Medical Students Not Taught Enough on LGBT, HIV/AIDS Issues

Medical students aren’t being taught the unique health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, according to a survey of school deans published in The Journal of the American Medical Association and reported by The Associated Press (AP). Out of a four-year doctorate program, on average, schools devoted five hours to topics such as sex reassignment surgery, mental health and HIV/AIDS. Nearly all responding schools taught students to ask patients their sexual orientation when gathering a medical history, but they are not being taught to engage and carry the conversation further.
