Rep. Lee Introduces 'Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic Act of 2012'

U.S. Representative Barbara Lee (D–Calif.) and 34 cosponsors have introduced the Ending HIV/AIDS Act of 2012 (H.R. 6138), a bill that establishes a policy and funding framework to achieve an AIDS-free generation in the United States and abroad, according to a Lee statement. The bill increases federal HIV funding and improves the efficiency of exiting HIV programs by establishing a system that’s built on evidence-based approaches to ending the epidemic. The bill strengthens policy priorities such as accelerating HIV research, improving provisions for monitoring care, and expanding comprehensive sex education and the distribution of condoms to people in prison. The bill would also focus on ending HIV stigma and discrimination by repealing and reforming laws that single out people with HIV for harsher charges or punishment.
