The number of new HIV infections for Minnesota has dropped overall but is still high for adolescents and young men, according to the Star Tribune. While the total number of new cases dropped from 370 in 2009 to 331 in 2010, and the number of new infections among males ages 13 to 24 dropped slightly too, from 78 in 2009 to 72 in 2010, the rates for young men have stayed higher than annual totals over the past decade. According to health officials, the high number may be related to complacency among young gay men who don’t perceive HIV to be as “scary” as it used to be now that there are life-sustaining antiretroviral medications.
