Improving maternal health, reducing child mortality and preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV were the major themes of the African Union summit held in Uganda from July 25 to 27, according to a joint statement from The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Both groups urged African leaders to increase efforts and funding for HIV testing and treatment, safe delivery practices, breast-milk substitutes and family planning.
