An Alabama man is suing LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, saying he received blood infected with HIV during a coronary bypass surgery, WSFA reports. The lawsuit alleges that in 2011, LifeSouth notified local hospitals after discovering it had distributed blood products that tested positive for HIV. After blood testing the next month, the patient, Howard Midkiff, tested positive for HIV. The suit claims that LifeSouth negligently provided blood infected with HIV and failed to implement or use screening, handling and testing procedures. LifeSouth declined to comment.
