DC City Council Sends Medical Marijuana Bill to Mayor Fenty

The Washington, DC, City Council voted unanimously to permit doctors to write prescriptions for medical marijuana to people with HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, cancer or a “chronic and lasting disease,” The New York Times reports.

According to the article, the bill establishes up to eight dispensaries. Patients, caregivers, cannabis clubs and growers all have to register with the city to obtain the drug.

Patients may receive up to 2 ounces of marijuana each month. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, who is expected to sign the bill, can raise the amount to 4 ounces without additional approval from the City Council.

Congress and the White House have 30 days to reject the plan after the mayor signs it into law. If it’s enacted, Washington, DC, will join 14 states that allow medical marijuana.

This marks the City Council’s second vote on the bill, which was first approved in April.
