Michigan Police Disclose Man’s HIV Status to Ex-Girlfriend
A Detroit man may face felony charges for not disclosing his HIV-positive status to his ex-girlfriend, The Michigan Messenger reports. The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested over a suspended license. During a routine medical inquiry at the jail, he released his status to police officers, who then released his status to his ex-girlfriend. It is a violation of Michigan law for an HIV-positive person to have sex without disclosing his or her status. The woman, whose name has also not been released, has since filed a complaint. However, the American Civil Liberties Union has said the police officer who disclosed the man’s status may have violated state confidentiality laws.
