FDA Approves Canadian One-Minute HIV Test
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new rapid HIV test developed and produced by Canadian company bioLytical for sale in the United States, The Vancouver Sun reports. The INSTI HIV Rapid Antibody Test detects antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in one minute and is currently available in more than 50 countries. Rick Galli, chief technical officer for bioLytical, said that U.S. medical officials are moving toward using rapid HIV tests as the standard of care and that the tests have been endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The kit is expected to cost from $8 to $12.
