A school district in central Missouri refutes a claim that area schools teach abstinence-only sex education, The Columbia Daily Tribune reports.

Kimberly Wright of Rain, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing organization, made the claim in a previous Tribune article. In response, Sara Torres, science and health curriculum education coordinator for Columbia Public Schools, the local school district, said that the district provides a comprehensive sex education program.

Cale Mitchell, Rain’s executive director, said Wright’s comments were “misrepresented” and agreed the school district does not teach abstinence-only sex education.

According to the article, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported 57 STI cases in Boone County from 2008 to 2009. Of those, 31 were among 10- to 14-year-old females who tested positive for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
