NYC Community Board Approves New AIDS Memorial Design

A New York City Community Board has approved a modified design for an AIDS memorial park across from the former St. Vincent’s Hospital site, Gay City News (GCN) reports. The hospital was the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic in the early days. A winning proposal in a design competition was rejected by the site’s developer, Rudin Management, which plans to convert the hospital to luxury condos. Brooklyn architecture firm Studio a+i took the original idea for the memorial and shrunk to fit in a small triangular corner of the Greenwich Village park. The Landmarks Preservation Commission and the City Planning Council must also approve the plans for the memorial, and a budget still needs to be finalized.
