NYC Ads Show Graphic Content to Fight HIV
A New York City health department public service announcement (PSA) is drawing heat for using graphic content to warn gay and bisexual men about the health problems related to HIV, including bone loss, dementia and anal cancer, reports The Advocate. The “Never Just HIV” campaign aims to fight the notion that HIV is not as serious as it used to be just because effective treatments are now available. The New York City health commissioner said he hoped men would see the message and take responsibility for their health. Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have released statements demanding the health department pull the ad, calling the PSA “sensationalistic and stigmatizing.”
