Instead of taking the typical ghoulish and ghastly route for Halloween this year, the New York Design Center (NYDC) and Alpha Workshops opted for a Roaring 1920s and Glamour theme for its Sixth Annual Masquerade Ball. A cleared-out studio at The New York Design Center served as the venue on October 27 in New York City.

All guests showed up dressed to impress. Some groups went the more traditional route going as flappers, donning cropped wigs, feathers, headpieces and, of course, dresses made of ornate beading and fringe—topped off with a classic red lip (see: POZ’s Jennifer Morton and Lauren Tuck in the below slideshow). Men stuck to gangsters toting cap machine guns, and to newsboys hawking the daily papers.

Standout costumes, although not necessarily on theme, included Amelia Earhart covered in seaweed, Homer Hoover, swimmers in ’20s traditional bathing suits, silent picture actors, someone dressed as Prohibition hooch, and a man who came as the New York Design Center itself, which is celebrating it’s 85th year. Group efforts included the cast of Little Orphan Annie and two Prince William and Kate Middleton wedding parties.

All proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Alpha Workshops Studio School, which is a nonprofit organization that trains individuals living with HIV in the decorative arts.
