NYC Survey of Teens Reveals Risky Sexual Behavior

A survey of more than 17,000 New York City high school students from 2005 to 2007 reveals many teens are participating in risky sexual behavior, NY1 reports. According to the study, which was published in the journal Pediatrics, more than 40 percent of high school students have had sexual intercourse and nearly one in 10 say they have had at least one same-sex partner. The report found that only 44 percent of males with both male and female partners reported using a condom, compared with 79 percent of male teens with female partners and 62 percent of teens with same-sex partners. In addition, one third of teens who had same-sex experiences identified themselves as straight. As a result, the report suggests public health messages focus on behavior and not identity.
