Funding Cuts Force N.H. AIDS Group to Stop Free HIV Testing

The Southern New Hampshire HIV/AIDS Task Force, the state’s only AIDS service organization (ASO), will no longer offer free HIV testing because of a $60,000 cut in federal funding, the New Hampshire Union Leader reports. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is increasing funding for urban areas with high rates of new HIV cases, but it’s significantly decreasing grant money going to states like New Hampshire that have comparatively low HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. About 40 people are diagnosed with HIV in New Hampshire each year, and roughly 1,400 people have been diagnosed with the virus in that state. The New Hampshire ASO will boost its fundraising efforts to sustain its current level of client services, and it hopes to eventually restore free HIV testing.
