New Kind of AIDS Activists Developing on U.S. Campuses

A new breed of AIDS activists is evolving on college campuses—a small group of public health students, mostly heterosexual, mostly personally untouched by HIV/AIDS and mostly acting out of a sense of solidarity and social justice for those facing the epidemic abroad, The New York Times reports. Loose knit and mostly Ivy Leaguers, they have made headlines for their high-powered connections and for their confrontational tactics, like heckling President Obama at rallies. They claim the president has fallen short on his pledge to fight HIV/AIDS oversees, but the president’s health advisers say the activists are yelling tired arguments and ignoring the administration’s emphasis on more efficient spending.
