The Normal Heart Debuts on Broadway
The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer’s critically acclaimed 1985 play about the rise of HIV in New York City in the 1980s, debuts on Broadway April 19, Playbill reports. The limited 12-week engagement officially opens April 27. The play is a semiautobiographical story by the founder of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. After the show’s off-Broadway success in the mid-’80s and again in 2004, producers held a staged reading in 2010 that raised $150,000 for charity. The 2010 reading led to the Broadway production, which features Joe Mantello, John Benjamin Hickey, Ellen Barkin, Lee Pace and Jim Parsons, with direction by Joel Grey.
