Condoms at London Olympic Village to Fight HIV/AIDS

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has provided about 100,000 condoms for more than 12,000 athletes participating in the 2012 London Summer Olympics; the move is part of IOC’s commitment to HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, Policy Mic reports. In 2004, the IOC signed a Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) memorandum agreeing to leverage its influence to combat the virus. The IOC developed a toolkit to distribute to coaches and other sports administrators as a way to help them educate their athletes about the virus. The toolkit includes best prevention practices and a specific section dedicated to the relationship between sports and HIV. The IOC strongly encourages HIV-positive Olympic athletes to publicly disclose their status as a way to decrease stigma.
